The Everyday Mechanic Academy is free educational material about how vehicles work. It explains mechanisms. It is general information, and it is not advice about your particular vehicle, which we have not seen.

A lesson cannot diagnose your car. If something in a lesson matches what your car is doing, that is a good reason to get it looked at, not a substitute for looking at it.

Some of what these lessons describe is genuinely dangerous to do badly. A car dropping off a jack kills people. Brakes reassembled wrong fail at the moment you need them. The high-voltage system in a hybrid or an electric vehicle can kill you outright, and working on one without the correct training and equipment is not a thing to attempt after reading anything, including us.

Where a lesson says a job is beyond home tools or home training, it means it. You take responsibility for what you do with what you learn here.

We check the physics and cite sources where a claim rests on one. We will still be wrong sometimes. When we are, we correct the lesson rather than quietly deleting it.

If you find an error, tell us. A correction from a reader who knows more than we do about one component is worth more than a week of our own review.

Sending the booking form is an enquiry. It is not a confirmed booking, and it does not hold a slot. A booking exists once we have confirmed it with you.

No price on this site is a quote. We price a job after we have seen the vehicle, and we tell you the figure before we start.

Nothing on this page limits your rights under the Australian Consumer Law. Our services come with guarantees that cannot be excluded, and if anything here reads as though it excludes them, it does not.

Republishing the lessons as your own, or scraping the site wholesale, is not on. The material took a working technician's time to write.

The site is provided as it is. We do not promise it will be up, and the interactive simulations need a browser that can run them. Where a simulation cannot load, the physics is in the text beneath it — that is deliberate.
